WHEN FUNCTION FOLLOWS FORM IT CREATES UNEXPECTED SOLUTIONS TO ORDINARY PRODUCTS.
The key characteristic of industrial design is that the design is separated from the manufacturing process. Meaning that the creative act of determining and defining a product's form and features takes place in advance of the physical act of making a it. This distinguishes industrial design from craft-based design, where the form of the product is determined by the product's creator at the time of its creation.
All manufactured products are the result of a design process, but the nature of this process can take many forms. The role of an industrial designer is to create and execute design solutions for problems of form, function, usability, physical ergonomics, marketing, brand development, sustainability, and sales. We had some fun in our studio exploring these possibilities and here are some of the solutions we came up with for both product and design.
CELCIO SMART ENERGY PLUG
Proactive branding and product design project for a climate control system. Working with technology developed by a team of UK electronic engineers, Celcio was created to be a fully integrated system that gives you reliable control of your rooms, ensuring that your home stays healthy and you save on your electric bills. The brand, product and packaging required a sophisticated sci-fi approach.
NUNU MORTAR AND PESTLE
Nunu is an In-house product design inspirational project. Our team, who love all things creative including cooking, was inspired by the elegant simplicity of Scandinavian design and the natural world around us. Nunu is crafted from natural materials, with a solid oak base and recycled marble, making it ideal for grinding herbs and spices. Our goal was to create a luxurious product that wether on the table, on the shelf or in use - the eye would be magically drawn to its beauty and simplicity, giving any kitchen a touch of understated class.
REDESIGNING DATED HOME DEVICES BACK TO SEXY
Another pro-active exercise by our talented team. As designers, we took offense as to how some of the functional devices in various environments were an absolute eyesore. Taking matters into our own hands we decided to have a creative play and develop what we felt would be a more aesthetic design solution.
