COLLABORATING WITH A SPECIAL COMMUNITY TO CREATE ONE OF SOUTH AFRICA'S BEST CULTURAL ATTRACTIONS.
The Mphebatho Cultural Museum is a heritage institution that offers its visitors an experience to participate and learn about the culture and history of the Bakgatla-Ba-Kgafela community. The museum offers a variety of activities such as village heritage site tours, Exhibition on history of the Bakgatla tribe, and Indigenous games to mention only a few.
The Challenge
In collaboration with one of our South African partner agencies, our task was to work together to create an identity, brand collateral and exhibition space that reflected the unique culture and history of the Bakgatla-Ba-Kgafela community. Absolute sensitivity had to be shown to meeting their objectives of preservation, conservation and celebration of their heritage. The project required the promotion of cultural education, establishing the Museum as a tourism attraction and the exploration of the Bakgatla-Ba-Kgafela indigenous knowledge systems.
The Outcome
The museum has become known as an inspiring addition to the existing tourism route within Bojanala district offering a diverse and different form of experience and product/s to those that are currently offered by nearby tourism institutions. The Bakgatla-ba-Kgafela have embarked on a heritage project that will not only benefit their own community but will offer a set of best practices for other southern African communities to follow. We are deeply honoured to have collaborated with a very talented team and participated in the creation of this special and unique project.
